First time Macbook owner…

“Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.”

Wise words spoken by the one and only Yoda of the Star Wars franchise.

Nevertheless, I’m going to try this out. Again.

I say again because I was once a Macbook owner. That’s right, for a full 10 days I used a Macbook pro to conduct my graduate work. I hated every second of it. I ended up returning the laptop for a full refund on day 12 of the 14 day return period. Something about the MacOS was and remains so unintuitive to me. And yet, here we are again.

My trusty Lenovo Thinkpad, which I’ve had since 2015 and has survived the beating that comes with pursuing a graduate degree that relied heavily on computational power, is on its last legs. Honestly, I suspect if I really wanted, I could buy a replacement battery and wipe hard drive to get the laptop working good as new. But no, I’m instead making the choice to embrace change and move into a new era.

In actuality, I just couldn’t find a laptop running Windows OS that I really liked. The Dell XPS 13+ was a close contender, but I ultimately decided to try out the 2022 Macbook Air with the M2 chip. I have my reservations, one being that there is no fan and so the laptop might run very hot. I have a tendency to really abuse my computers somehow so I’m hoping to prevent this with additional ram. I am side-eyeing Apple though for not including 16 GB as the default option, but whatever.

I’m no stranger to a Unix based system. I actually prefer it. I fell in love back in the olden days when I had my first iPod. The iPod with buttons, mind you. Not the click-wheel. I really enjoyed going into the configurations and writing weird little scripts. My accomplishments include getting both sodoku and pong on the original iPod. Though both were much easier to play once the click wheel hardware came out. Nowadays I have my iPhone (reluctantly) because it was the best option after my Pixel 3a started lagging enough to annoy me. I’m still eyeing the upcoming Pixel 7 though, for what it’s worth.

Anyway, my Macbook has arrived today and while I’m already frustrated trying to set up multiple external displays (which are conveniently unavailable on the M1 and M2 chips without a workaround) I’m willing to give this a shot.
